Wood mask, 'Strong Man'
Inspired by the customs of the Baoule people from the Ivory Coast, Victor Yao Delanyo carves a splendid replica of a museum piece. The mask portrays a strong man with an elaborate coiffure and tribal markings across his cheeks. According to Baoule custom, this type of mask is worn for magical practices celebrated during the funeral of person from a sect or secret society. Delanyo carves the mask by hand from local sese wood. He uses manual tools, some of his own making, in order to achieve the refined detailing that embellishes the mask.
