Wood fertility dolls, 'Asantewaa' (pair)
Asantewaa, the name of this pair of dolls, was a brave queen mother of the Ashanti people of Ghana. She was renowned for her ability to lead men into war, and since that time, many women who bear this name manifest a representative level of valor and intelligence. Carved from sese wood, the pieces exemplify Daniel Nyadedzor's creative and historical artistry. Aluminum plates, emulsion paints, clay, and a finish of Mansion polish complete the reverent design. The carvings are known as akuaba, or fertility dolls.
